The Swiss-French architect and designer Le Corbusier assumed that furniture must be “extensions of the human limb”, wherein they are custom-made to a range of purpose of the human body even as being prudent at doing so. This early idea of elegant design is rampant in the entire of Le Corbusier’s furniture making. One of these current furniture designs by Le Corbusier that is still offered to the regular man is the LC4 Chaise Lounge.

One of Le Corbusier’s most famous furniture works, the Le Corbusier No. 4 or LC4 Chaise Lounge is his modernist description of the typical French chaise longue or long chair design. Le Corbusier made the LC4 in partnership with Charlotte Perriand in 1928, and was originally utilized at the Villa Church in Paris. Then in 1929 the Chaise Lounge was showed at the celebrated Salon d’ Automnne art show as division of the Equipment for the Home inauguration.

A supporter of discreet International Style, Le Corbusier shared the LC4 Chaise Lounge with just three essential parts. These divisions were the independent support frame at the foot, the curved cradle in the center, and the cushioned mat which works as the chair’s seat and backrest on the uppermost. The LC4’s foot is separable from the rest of the chair, and is completed from high-grade steel layered with a black matte enamel finish. The chrome-plated steel cot sits on top of the base, and is curled into a crescent form to allow the chair to lie down easily adjacent to the base. The cushioned mat, on the other hand, is roofed with ponyskin, black aniline leather or a distinctive ecru canvas and fixed with an equivalent leather headroll cushion on top for further ease.

At present, real reproductions of the LC4 Chaise Lounge are created by the Cassina furniture company of Milan, Italy.
