The Creative Pioneer Of Modern FurnitureDesign: Le Corbusier

The 20th century has made its contribution of numerous furniture designers, but when it comes to the finest it all goes down to just a handful. But one title that would actually be acknowledge would be that of Le Corbusier. Considered as one of the new pioneers of the recent movement, the Swiss-French architect and designer Le Corbusier made some of the stylish furniture creations of the 20th century.

Most like his latest Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier (whose correct name is Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris) was actually and architect by trade and utilize his creations as furnishings for his architectural projects. Before to acting his own Le Corbusier relied on ready-made furnishings from other manufacturers, various notably from the finest cabinet-maker Michael Thonet. But in 1928, Le Corbusier initiated discovering with furniture creations and called designer Charlotte Perriand to aid him in his studio. Le Corbusier’s teamwork with Perriand concluded with three tubular steel chair designs which where then made in two of Le Corbusier architectural creations, the Maison la Roche and the Pavilion of Barbara and Henry Church. The creations where later progress into a collection, and shown at the celebrated 1929 Salon d’ Automne controlled the Equipment for the Home installation.

In addition to his creations in furniture, Le Corbusier also noted a book about concerning the subject. Titled the L’Art Décoratif d’aujourd’hui, the 1925 book tells furniture design into three distinctive class: type-needs, type-furniture, and human limb objects. Of the three Le Corbusier offered the human-limb object-type furniture more meaning, naming it as an expansion of the human limb and is hence customized to its many functions. Le Corbusier also added that this kind of furniture is a “docile servant”, which is subtle in its point and allows its “master” free. This latest concept of ergonomic design would later be famous in Le Corbusier’s creations such as the LC1 Sling Chair and the LC4 Chaise Lounge.
