The Do’s and Don’t of House Shutter Installation

If you have two good hands and know how to use a level you can start installing house shutters in your home. If you feel uncomfortable about doing the job, you may want to hire a carpenter to install the shutters on your home. However, installing shutters is very simple and can be accomplished by anyone with basic knowledge.

Do not be put off about installing your exterior house shutters. If others can accomplish this undemanding job, so can you. You just need to learn a few simple procedures. There are two different procedures to follow when installing your shutters. You can decide on an inside mount or an outside mount. It is preferred to perform an inside mount because it can be done straight from your open window.

Inside mount installation

For an inside mount installation, the shutter attaches upon the inside of the window casing on the window jamb. This is ordinarily a better process of installation and is used primarily by professionals because it is cleaner and requires no framing strips.

The window jamb should be solid. Then, you need to attach the shutter hardware with screws. To do this, drill a hole through the jamb at the appropriate areas so that the hardware can be mounted into the window jamb. The jamb has to be solid so that the shutter will be secure.

Once you have attached the hardware, you should check to see if the shutters align properly with the window. You might use a level to be sure that they are lined up. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions as each type of inside mounted shutter is attached differently. If you understand how to use a drill motor, you will be able to easily perform installing house shutters in an inside mount position.

Outside mount installation

Understandably, an outside mount attaches to the outside of the window, normally into the trim, or even the wall. If you intend to install an outside mount for interior shutters, make sure that you do not screw the hardware into drywall unless it is anchored because the unit will just fall off of the wall. Some people favor an outside mount which allows the shutters to be not quite exact in terms of the measurements, which an inside mount will not allow. However, the outside mount does not look as finished as the inside mount.

Remember to use a plumb bob and level when installing shutters to make sure that they are straight. Your eyes might be fooled, but a level will not. You will want to have an electric drill, a drive socket and the right apexes, as well as toggles if you are installing on a wall panel without a stud.

Do not think you can’t install your house shutters yourself. This is not a difficult job and when you have installed one shutter, the rest will go quickly. Installing house shutters is simple, as long as you have the proper tools, including a screwdriver, drill, toggle mounts (if installing into drywall) and a level, you will be able to do this job easily and within a short period of time.
