Old Fashioned Flat Roof Materials Are Being Replaced By More Durable Membrane Fabrics
Flat roofing does not always mean using unreliable layers of gravel and asphalt. Nobody can argue against the benefit of asphalt in protection against UV rays or the holding capability that gravel offers. However, the problem in using these materials is that leaks cannot be detected easily. Residents have to bear the brunt of leakages that become almost undetectable because of gravel, and over time the roof stops serving its basic purpose. This problem is also associated with use of asphalt.
A much more popular technique these days is that of membrane flat roofing. It is easier to detect leaks in this method, which is its biggest advantage over other roofing methods. As far as other functions of guarding against the weather and providing robustness to the roof are concerned, it does as well as any other modern roofing technique would do.
The use of membranes is not restricted to flat roofing. For example, their usage on old tin roofs would work out far less expensive than purchasing a new roof. In addition, as mentioned at london flat roofing, they are equally useful for hip roofs and almost any other sort of slanted roofs.
Currently three types of flat roofing membranes are popular in the market. The first is the Thermoset Membrane, which is made of large pieces of synthetic membranes that are welded together at the seams. EPDM and ECR, which are advanced forms of rubber and are known for their sturdiness, are often used in these membranes. The second category is Thermoplastic Membranes, which are akin to the first one, but these are not vulcanized. Modified Bitumen, which can be considered a modern variant of asphalt, is the third major kind of flat roofing membranes. Use of this membrane requires techniques of cold adhesion to fuse the materials. Be sure to look at epdm roofing for detailed descriptions of the modern flat roofing methods.
The climate setting that your roof is placed in and any additional purpose that you would want it to serve will have to be considered before finalizing a membrane type. Take into consideration your finances too before settling for a particular flat roofing membrane.
